단풍나무 사각 접시 Making rectangular maple wood bowl

전에 다듬은 단풍나무를 대패질한 것을 올렸었다.
참 오랜 기간 조금씩 작업했다.
단풍나무 자투리 토막으로 사각형 그릇을 만들었다.

속의 오목한 면은 루터로 기초 가공을 했다.

I posted an article about planing a maple off-cut.

I made a rectangular bowl with it.

I used my Festool router with edge guide to make concave.

그릇 바닥도 루터로 사각형 꼴로 만들었다.

그런데 바닥 모양을 사각형으로 하는 건 다시 생각해 볼 필요가 있다.
The base of bowl is rectangular.  But shaping rectangular convex surface is not effective.
I have to consider another design and method.

기본 모양을 만들고 나서 환끌로 파기 시작했다.
After finishing basic shape with router.
I started to chop out to shape concave using several different gouge chisels.

나무가 잘 말라 있어서 면이 깔끔했다.
끌질 하는 느낌이 좋았지만 나무가 단단해서 힘들기는 하다.
물에 30분 정도 담갔다가 파는 것도 시험 삼아 해 봤다.
끌질을 할 때 나무가 부드러워져서 효과가 있다.

The maple off-cut was dried very well. So, The surface of wood after chisel chopping was very clean and nice.
It feels good whenever I chop the maple block.
I tried to chop after sinking the maple for 30~40 minutes.
It worked. That soften the wood a little.

완성한 모양이다. 사포질을 조금 하고 아마씨유를 발라서 마감했다.

I finished it after sanding and coating raw linseed oil.

다른 그릇을 하나 더 만들려고 한다.
처음부터 손으로 파려다가 포기했다. 대신 탁상 드릴로 파 보려고 한다.
그리고 바닥면 모양도 깎기 쉬운 모양으로 할 계획이다.

I'm going to make one more rectangular bowl.
I started with gouge chisel, but I gave up soon.
Instead, I exchanged the tool into drill press.
There is a another change on bowl base for effectiveness.

생활 소품, 시계 거치대를 만들다. Oak Watch Stand (holder)

없어도 되지만 있으면 생활에 작은 변화를 주는 소품이 있다.

시계 거치대를 만들어 봤다.

한 소품 회사의 것을 참고했고 나는 두 개를 동시에 걸 수 있는 걸로 바꿔 봤다.

참고한 작품 모양은 바닥이 따로 없이 시계만 하나 걸 수 있는 것인데,

나는 바닥판을 더하고 시계를 두 개 걸 수 있게 바꿨다.

모양은 비슷하게 흉내낼 수 있다.

하지만 나뭇결을 맞추기, 사포질과 칠에 정성을 들이지 않으면

결국 조잡한 물건을 흉내내는 것 밖에 되지 않는다는 걸

새삼 느낀다.

It doesn't make big differences in my life to have a small specific craft.
But it is certain that the small one gives a little emotional change.

I made a watch holder. It is red oak.

Frankly, the original design is from a woodworking craft book.

I just added base and walnut piece for a variation.

It is easy to imitate the original craft.

But If I can't add new idea or consider matching of wood grain, finish with nice sanding and painting, I can't guaranty quality of my craft.  That is nothing but a coarse copying.

학생 작품 재료를 마련하다. Cut redpine wood for students

학생 견본 작품을 목공 동아리 학부모들이 만들었다.
구조재를 끌과 톱으로 속을 파내 대칭으로 만들어 마주보고 붙였다.

아이들이 끌과 톱으로 팔 때는 위 그림처럼 깔끔하게 되지는 않을 거다.

학교 예산으로 45T 소나무를 마련했고 그나무를 길이 300mm, 폭 100mm 정도로 재단했다.

아이들은 옹이가 없고 깔끔한 이 나무를 보고 매우 반가워 했다.

그동안 자기들이 체험하던 나무와 달리 옹이도 없고 곧은 결이었다.

위 그림은 학교 목공실이다. 한 교실에서는 기계 작업과 소집단 교육을 한다. 한 학급 단위의 수업은 옆에 있는 실습실에서 한다.

Several samples of pencil case was done by parents woodworking club members.

They cut one side of the wood out to make space for containing pencils.

Two symmetry pieces are needed.

I surmise that it is a little hard work to students.

We bought 45T red pine and cut it into small pieces. 300 (L) * 100(W)

150 blocks for all students. Every students have their own block.

I used Bosch 10" table saw. One teacher assisted me.

The upper picture is my school school woodworking workshop.

It's almost half size of normal classroom. Small group class can be hold here.

Ordinarily, Whole class size lessons are hold at the main practicing classroom next to workshop.

학생 목공 작품 구상 ( Students woodworking topic)

우리 학교에서는 5,6학년 학생들이 한 학기씩 목공을 한다.

작년까지는 2단위 시간씩 10회를 했으나 올해는 8회로 줄였다.

작은 이유가 몇 가지 있기는 하지만 예산이 줄어든 게 가장 주요하다.

올해는 5학년 담임교사를 하는데, 작년보다 목공 교육 시간은 줄었지만 알차게 목공 시간을 활용할 내용을 고민했다.

5학년 학생의 작품은 기계를 사용하지 않고 나무를 만지고 느끼며 칼과 끌, 망치, 톱 등을 이용한 작업을 중심으로 하려고 한다.

초등학교 목공 교육의 목적이 기능 신장이 아니라 감수성 발달에 더 초점을 두어야 하기 때문이다.

세 가지 주제로 운영할 계획이다. 나뭇가지 깎기, 공통 작품으로 연필꽂이 만들기, 자유롭게 생활용품 만들기를 해 보려고 한다.

8회에 이 세 가지를 다 하는 건 조금은 빡빡한 일정이다.

하지만 아이들에게 최대한 많은 체험을 하게 해 주고 싶은 욕심은 버리기 힘들다.

다행히 학부모 목공동아리 학부모들이 보조 교사로 지원하니 큰 힘이다.

무엇보다 현재 선생님들의 열의가 강하며 연습으로 빠르게 기능을 습득하고 있으니 충분히 가능하다고 생각한다.

오늘 첫 시작으로 학부모 동아리와 협의를 하고 교사들도 본격적인 연습을 시작했다.

5th, 6th Students do woodworking during first or second semester.

It was scheduled to 10 block times activities until last year. (One block time is two class hours).

But, it is reduced 8 block times this year due to reduction of school special purpose budget.
I considered how we can provide substantial contents to students in spite of less teaching hours.

This year, We planned to do unplugged woodworking. Cutting small branches and whittling with safe knifes. Making pencil stand through using chisel(Common topic). Making small toys or crafts (What students want to make).

Saw, clamp, knife, chisel,

It is a little bit tight. But We will try.

Parents woodworking club members are going to assist teachers this year too.

Most of all, Teachers are challenging practicing basic skills and growing fast enough to teach students.

내 로고 만들기 Having my logo

공방에는 자체의 불도장이 있다.

그리고 친한 한 회원은 자기 이름을 불도장으로 갖고 있으며 작품마다 그 도장을 찍고 있다.

나도 그런 도장을 갖고 싶었는데 그건 이제 레이저 각인기로 대체할 수 있다.

관건은 디자인이다.

그런데 오래 전에 동료 선생님의 부군께서 선물로 그려 주신 그림이 있어그걸 쓰기로 했다.

참 멋진 그림이다.

스캔을 하고 그것을 손본 다음 레이저 각인기로 시험삼아 찍어 보았다.

크기와 해상도를 달리해서 시도해 봤는데 그림 크기도 문제거니와 해상도는 100dpi이하로 설정해야 한다.

그림이 5cm를 조금만 넘어도 각인 시간이 10분을 넘으니 지루하다.

그리고 원본 그림도 조금 더 단순하게 하고 크기와 해상도를 바꿔 몇 가지 파일을 새로 만들어 시험을 다시 해 봐야겠다.

There is the brand for engraving on hand-made furniture.

And One member of workshop has his own brand.

I also wanted to have my unique brand. But I don't have to order it now due to we have a laser engraver.

The the design is the key. It must be beautiful, meaningful, original

I tried to design my logo for several months. Finally, I found the best solution.
That is the picture that I was presented 6,7 years ago from a close colleague.
Her husband drew the picture by himself for me.
It is A2 size.

My friend scanned that picture partly several times and combined them into one file.

I edited that file for more natural mood and saved into several format files.

Test-engraving was half successful.

Control software don't have enough functions what I want. And It took 10 minutes even for small engraving. Resolution should be downed under 100 dpi.
Because the leaves in the picture made the process complex, I have to simply the upper part of the picture.

The best condition and size is not found yet. I'll try again.

톱질 자세 Sawing stance

주먹장이나 사개맞춤을 위해 톱질할 때 목슨 바이스에 물려서 선 자세로 톱질을 했었다.
자세가 문제인지 톱질이 어긋날 때가 가끔 있다.

그런데 공방장이 앉아서 하는 방법을 강력히 추천했다. 부재를 클램프로 고정하는 번거로움을 손으로 살짝 눌러주니 작업이 쉬워진다.

예전에 알려줬는데 그 때는 몇 번 시도하다가 그만두었다. 이번에 다시 자세히 알려 주어
작업대에 부재를 그대로 뉘어 두고 그 앞에 앉아 바닥과 수직으로 톱질을 했다. 그런데 효과가 아주 좋았다. 정확하게 잘 된다.

우리 톱은, 날이 몸쪽으로 되어 있어서 잡아 당길 때 힘을 주어야 한다. 눕혀서 톱질할 때는 아래쪽으로 힘을 주면되는데 중력과 몸의 구조 때문인지 움직임이 매우 자연스럽다. 그래서 힘도 덜 든다.

티톱질을 할 때도 그렇다.

단점은 얼굴 바로 앞에 먼지가 있다는 것, 쪼그려 앉아 있는 게 힘들다는 것.



Whenever I did box-joint or dovetail sawing, I did it at standing stance with clamping wood.

But it was not so accurate as I wished or tried. Sometimes I was frustrated.
The master of workshop recommended me strongly to saw in sitting stance.

He mentioned it about that method several years ago. At that time, I tried that way a few times and forgot it.  There were a few reasons. First,  sitting stance was not so comfortable as I wished. Second, Accuracy was not desperate.

At sitting stance, I don't have to clamp wood. Just pressing wood with one hand is enough. And it is due to Korean saw teeth. It is different with western style. Because of gravity I can saw easily.

With sitting stance, I could do more accurate sawing nowadays. Fret sawing is also.

There are two weak points. Wood dust in front of my face, pain of your legs.

홀드 다운 클램프 Bench clamp, Hold down clamp

작업대에서 끌질을 하거나, 앉아서 톱질을 할 때 부재를 고정할 장치가 필요하다.
일반 클램프로 할 수도 있지만 홀드다운 클램프가 더 필요할 때가 있다.

작업대는 공방에서 직접 만든 작품이라 구멍이 없다.   도그홀을 만들고 베리타스사의 홀드다운 클램프를 설치할 수도 있지만 새로운 장비를 계속 사는 건 비용과 관리의 문제가 생긴다.

예전에 지그를 만들기 위해 홀드다운 클램프와 티트랙을 갖고 있었는데 이것을 활용해 보기로 했다.

바닥에 홈을 파고 인크라의 마이터 채널을 삽입한 후 마이터 슬라이드를 넣으면 됩다. 

인크라 마이터 채널 제품은 마감도 좋았고 이미 나사 구멍과 함께 고정용 못도 있었다. 필요해서 세 군데 더 구멍을 냈다.  나머지는 아래 그림처럼 슬라이드 트랙과 홀드다운 클램프의 볼트를 채널에 끼우기만 하면 된다. 

설치 후 톱질이나 끌질이 더 편해졌다.

Sometimes, hold down clamp is necessary.

When I do sawing in sitting stance or do chisel work.

Installing bench hold down clamp is also good solution for tight grip. But there is no dog holes on my bench. It is a self-made work bench.

I have considered to buy a Veritas fast-action hold down clamp. But that brings me a problem of budget and managing.

gave me a clue.

The solution was simple. I decided to recycled hold down clamps and miter slide track (the reds in above pictures) on the other jig.  Only a miter channel is necessary for new clamping system.  I ordered INCRA miter channel. There were ready-made holes for fastening and fasteners. It is very nice product. I made a hold and inserted miter channel into it.

It is useful works well.
