대패로 참나무 자투리 조각 다듬어 두기 Planing off-cut oaks.

참나무 의자를 여러 개 만들었을 때
자투리 나무가 제법 나왔다.
쓸만한 각재로 만들어 이용하고 싶어 모아 두었던 것을 대패질했다.
날을 잘 갈아서 대패질 표면이 매우 매끄럽게 잘 됐다.
거스러미도 없고 사포질할 필요가 없다.
일정 폭으로 여러 개를 해 두니 기분이 좋다.

A dozen of oak wood off-cut pieces were left after making oak chairs.

I kept them for later usage.

Today, I planed them to make small lumbers.

I sharpened the Stanley block plane before it.

There was no tear-out on the surface. It was clean and nice.

So, no need for sanding.

I felt good.

가죽을 배우다 Learning leather craft

가죽을 다룰 줄 안다면 매우 유용할 거라 생각한 때가 있다.
예를 들어 내게 맞는 끌집을 가죽으로 만들면 좋겠다고.
운 좋게도,
공방 회원 중에 가죽 공예를 하시는 분께 배울 기회가 생겼다.
그래서 기초 기술로 여권지갑을 하나 만들었다.
이어서 바로 말이식 연필 통을 만들었다.

바탕 면에 바르는 용액, 모서리에 바르는 용액, 실과 바늘, 구멍을 뚫는 그리프를
인터넷으로 바로 샀다.
무엇보다 구멍을 뚫는 그리프가 꼭 필요하다.
가죽도 조금 샀다. 열심히 만들어야지.


Sometimes I think that how useful it it if I am able to do leather craft.

For example, It will be wonderful If I can make my own leather rolling chisel case.

Fortunately,  I got a chance to learn leather craft from woodworking workshop members .
They had practiced leather craft skills at leather workshop for several months and also can make there own small projects. That's enough.

They taught basic skills to us and we completed own passport cover.

I challenged to make rolling pencil case and done.

I bought basic tools and stuffs for leather craft.  Griffe is essential tool for punching stitch holes.  Several small leather pieces also.

단풍나무 사각 접시 Making rectangular maple wood bowl

전에 다듬은 단풍나무를 대패질한 것을 올렸었다.
참 오랜 기간 조금씩 작업했다.
단풍나무 자투리 토막으로 사각형 그릇을 만들었다.

속의 오목한 면은 루터로 기초 가공을 했다.

I posted an article about planing a maple off-cut.

I made a rectangular bowl with it.

I used my Festool router with edge guide to make concave.

그릇 바닥도 루터로 사각형 꼴로 만들었다.

그런데 바닥 모양을 사각형으로 하는 건 다시 생각해 볼 필요가 있다.
The base of bowl is rectangular.  But shaping rectangular convex surface is not effective.
I have to consider another design and method.

기본 모양을 만들고 나서 환끌로 파기 시작했다.
After finishing basic shape with router.
I started to chop out to shape concave using several different gouge chisels.

나무가 잘 말라 있어서 면이 깔끔했다.
끌질 하는 느낌이 좋았지만 나무가 단단해서 힘들기는 하다.
물에 30분 정도 담갔다가 파는 것도 시험 삼아 해 봤다.
끌질을 할 때 나무가 부드러워져서 효과가 있다.

The maple off-cut was dried very well. So, The surface of wood after chisel chopping was very clean and nice.
It feels good whenever I chop the maple block.
I tried to chop after sinking the maple for 30~40 minutes.
It worked. That soften the wood a little.

완성한 모양이다. 사포질을 조금 하고 아마씨유를 발라서 마감했다.

I finished it after sanding and coating raw linseed oil.

다른 그릇을 하나 더 만들려고 한다.
처음부터 손으로 파려다가 포기했다. 대신 탁상 드릴로 파 보려고 한다.
그리고 바닥면 모양도 깎기 쉬운 모양으로 할 계획이다.

I'm going to make one more rectangular bowl.
I started with gouge chisel, but I gave up soon.
Instead, I exchanged the tool into drill press.
There is a another change on bowl base for effectiveness.

생활 소품, 시계 거치대를 만들다. Oak Watch Stand (holder)

없어도 되지만 있으면 생활에 작은 변화를 주는 소품이 있다.

시계 거치대를 만들어 봤다.

한 소품 회사의 것을 참고했고 나는 두 개를 동시에 걸 수 있는 걸로 바꿔 봤다.

참고한 작품 모양은 바닥이 따로 없이 시계만 하나 걸 수 있는 것인데,

나는 바닥판을 더하고 시계를 두 개 걸 수 있게 바꿨다.

모양은 비슷하게 흉내낼 수 있다.

하지만 나뭇결을 맞추기, 사포질과 칠에 정성을 들이지 않으면

결국 조잡한 물건을 흉내내는 것 밖에 되지 않는다는 걸

새삼 느낀다.

It doesn't make big differences in my life to have a small specific craft.
But it is certain that the small one gives a little emotional change.

I made a watch holder. It is red oak.

Frankly, the original design is from a woodworking craft book.

I just added base and walnut piece for a variation.

It is easy to imitate the original craft.

But If I can't add new idea or consider matching of wood grain, finish with nice sanding and painting, I can't guaranty quality of my craft.  That is nothing but a coarse copying.

학생 작품 재료를 마련하다. Cut redpine wood for students

학생 견본 작품을 목공 동아리 학부모들이 만들었다.
구조재를 끌과 톱으로 속을 파내 대칭으로 만들어 마주보고 붙였다.

아이들이 끌과 톱으로 팔 때는 위 그림처럼 깔끔하게 되지는 않을 거다.

학교 예산으로 45T 소나무를 마련했고 그나무를 길이 300mm, 폭 100mm 정도로 재단했다.

아이들은 옹이가 없고 깔끔한 이 나무를 보고 매우 반가워 했다.

그동안 자기들이 체험하던 나무와 달리 옹이도 없고 곧은 결이었다.

위 그림은 학교 목공실이다. 한 교실에서는 기계 작업과 소집단 교육을 한다. 한 학급 단위의 수업은 옆에 있는 실습실에서 한다.

Several samples of pencil case was done by parents woodworking club members.

They cut one side of the wood out to make space for containing pencils.

Two symmetry pieces are needed.

I surmise that it is a little hard work to students.

We bought 45T red pine and cut it into small pieces. 300 (L) * 100(W)

150 blocks for all students. Every students have their own block.

I used Bosch 10" table saw. One teacher assisted me.

The upper picture is my school school woodworking workshop.

It's almost half size of normal classroom. Small group class can be hold here.

Ordinarily, Whole class size lessons are hold at the main practicing classroom next to workshop.

학생 목공 작품 구상 ( Students woodworking topic)

우리 학교에서는 5,6학년 학생들이 한 학기씩 목공을 한다.

작년까지는 2단위 시간씩 10회를 했으나 올해는 8회로 줄였다.

작은 이유가 몇 가지 있기는 하지만 예산이 줄어든 게 가장 주요하다.

올해는 5학년 담임교사를 하는데, 작년보다 목공 교육 시간은 줄었지만 알차게 목공 시간을 활용할 내용을 고민했다.

5학년 학생의 작품은 기계를 사용하지 않고 나무를 만지고 느끼며 칼과 끌, 망치, 톱 등을 이용한 작업을 중심으로 하려고 한다.

초등학교 목공 교육의 목적이 기능 신장이 아니라 감수성 발달에 더 초점을 두어야 하기 때문이다.

세 가지 주제로 운영할 계획이다. 나뭇가지 깎기, 공통 작품으로 연필꽂이 만들기, 자유롭게 생활용품 만들기를 해 보려고 한다.

8회에 이 세 가지를 다 하는 건 조금은 빡빡한 일정이다.

하지만 아이들에게 최대한 많은 체험을 하게 해 주고 싶은 욕심은 버리기 힘들다.

다행히 학부모 목공동아리 학부모들이 보조 교사로 지원하니 큰 힘이다.

무엇보다 현재 선생님들의 열의가 강하며 연습으로 빠르게 기능을 습득하고 있으니 충분히 가능하다고 생각한다.

오늘 첫 시작으로 학부모 동아리와 협의를 하고 교사들도 본격적인 연습을 시작했다.

5th, 6th Students do woodworking during first or second semester.

It was scheduled to 10 block times activities until last year. (One block time is two class hours).

But, it is reduced 8 block times this year due to reduction of school special purpose budget.
I considered how we can provide substantial contents to students in spite of less teaching hours.

This year, We planned to do unplugged woodworking. Cutting small branches and whittling with safe knifes. Making pencil stand through using chisel(Common topic). Making small toys or crafts (What students want to make).

Saw, clamp, knife, chisel,

It is a little bit tight. But We will try.

Parents woodworking club members are going to assist teachers this year too.

Most of all, Teachers are challenging practicing basic skills and growing fast enough to teach students.

내 로고 만들기 Having my logo

공방에는 자체의 불도장이 있다.

그리고 친한 한 회원은 자기 이름을 불도장으로 갖고 있으며 작품마다 그 도장을 찍고 있다.

나도 그런 도장을 갖고 싶었는데 그건 이제 레이저 각인기로 대체할 수 있다.

관건은 디자인이다.

그런데 오래 전에 동료 선생님의 부군께서 선물로 그려 주신 그림이 있어그걸 쓰기로 했다.

참 멋진 그림이다.

스캔을 하고 그것을 손본 다음 레이저 각인기로 시험삼아 찍어 보았다.

크기와 해상도를 달리해서 시도해 봤는데 그림 크기도 문제거니와 해상도는 100dpi이하로 설정해야 한다.

그림이 5cm를 조금만 넘어도 각인 시간이 10분을 넘으니 지루하다.

그리고 원본 그림도 조금 더 단순하게 하고 크기와 해상도를 바꿔 몇 가지 파일을 새로 만들어 시험을 다시 해 봐야겠다.

There is the brand for engraving on hand-made furniture.

And One member of workshop has his own brand.

I also wanted to have my unique brand. But I don't have to order it now due to we have a laser engraver.

The the design is the key. It must be beautiful, meaningful, original

I tried to design my logo for several months. Finally, I found the best solution.
That is the picture that I was presented 6,7 years ago from a close colleague.
Her husband drew the picture by himself for me.
It is A2 size.

My friend scanned that picture partly several times and combined them into one file.

I edited that file for more natural mood and saved into several format files.

Test-engraving was half successful.

Control software don't have enough functions what I want. And It took 10 minutes even for small engraving. Resolution should be downed under 100 dpi.
Because the leaves in the picture made the process complex, I have to simply the upper part of the picture.

The best condition and size is not found yet. I'll try again.

톱질 자세 Sawing stance

주먹장이나 사개맞춤을 위해 톱질할 때 목슨 바이스에 물려서 선 자세로 톱질을 했었다.
자세가 문제인지 톱질이 어긋날 때가 가끔 있다.

그런데 공방장이 앉아서 하는 방법을 강력히 추천했다. 부재를 클램프로 고정하는 번거로움을 손으로 살짝 눌러주니 작업이 쉬워진다.

예전에 알려줬는데 그 때는 몇 번 시도하다가 그만두었다. 이번에 다시 자세히 알려 주어
작업대에 부재를 그대로 뉘어 두고 그 앞에 앉아 바닥과 수직으로 톱질을 했다. 그런데 효과가 아주 좋았다. 정확하게 잘 된다.

우리 톱은, 날이 몸쪽으로 되어 있어서 잡아 당길 때 힘을 주어야 한다. 눕혀서 톱질할 때는 아래쪽으로 힘을 주면되는데 중력과 몸의 구조 때문인지 움직임이 매우 자연스럽다. 그래서 힘도 덜 든다.

티톱질을 할 때도 그렇다.

단점은 얼굴 바로 앞에 먼지가 있다는 것, 쪼그려 앉아 있는 게 힘들다는 것.



Whenever I did box-joint or dovetail sawing, I did it at standing stance with clamping wood.

But it was not so accurate as I wished or tried. Sometimes I was frustrated.
The master of workshop recommended me strongly to saw in sitting stance.

He mentioned it about that method several years ago. At that time, I tried that way a few times and forgot it.  There were a few reasons. First,  sitting stance was not so comfortable as I wished. Second, Accuracy was not desperate.

At sitting stance, I don't have to clamp wood. Just pressing wood with one hand is enough. And it is due to Korean saw teeth. It is different with western style. Because of gravity I can saw easily.

With sitting stance, I could do more accurate sawing nowadays. Fret sawing is also.

There are two weak points. Wood dust in front of my face, pain of your legs.

홀드 다운 클램프 Bench clamp, Hold down clamp

작업대에서 끌질을 하거나, 앉아서 톱질을 할 때 부재를 고정할 장치가 필요하다.
일반 클램프로 할 수도 있지만 홀드다운 클램프가 더 필요할 때가 있다.

작업대는 공방에서 직접 만든 작품이라 구멍이 없다.   도그홀을 만들고 베리타스사의 홀드다운 클램프를 설치할 수도 있지만 새로운 장비를 계속 사는 건 비용과 관리의 문제가 생긴다.

예전에 지그를 만들기 위해 홀드다운 클램프와 티트랙을 갖고 있었는데 이것을 활용해 보기로 했다.

바닥에 홈을 파고 인크라의 마이터 채널을 삽입한 후 마이터 슬라이드를 넣으면 됩다. 

인크라 마이터 채널 제품은 마감도 좋았고 이미 나사 구멍과 함께 고정용 못도 있었다. 필요해서 세 군데 더 구멍을 냈다.  나머지는 아래 그림처럼 슬라이드 트랙과 홀드다운 클램프의 볼트를 채널에 끼우기만 하면 된다. 

설치 후 톱질이나 끌질이 더 편해졌다.

Sometimes, hold down clamp is necessary.

When I do sawing in sitting stance or do chisel work.

Installing bench hold down clamp is also good solution for tight grip. But there is no dog holes on my bench. It is a self-made work bench.

I have considered to buy a Veritas fast-action hold down clamp. But that brings me a problem of budget and managing.

gave me a clue.

The solution was simple. I decided to recycled hold down clamps and miter slide track (the reds in above pictures) on the other jig.  Only a miter channel is necessary for new clamping system.  I ordered INCRA miter channel. There were ready-made holes for fastening and fasteners. It is very nice product. I made a hold and inserted miter channel into it.

It is useful works well. 

비밀 기지와 목공 Woodworking for building a secret base

도서관에서 '비밀기지 만들기' 책을 빌려 봤다. 우연히 눈에 뜨인 책이다.

일본에는 참 사소한 소재의 책이 널려 있다는 걸 새삼 느낀다.

원제는 秘密基地の作り方

尾方孝弘／著 のりたけ／イラスト 지음 | 飛鳥新社 | 2012년 05월 01일)

어렸을 때 작고 은밀한 장소에서 친구와 나누던 이야기와 간식은

소중한 경험으로 마음에 품고 있다.

이 책은 그런 경험이 모아져 있고 아이들에게 동심을 살릴 비밀 기지를 만드는 방법을 소개해 준다. 독특한 소재이기는 하지만 비밀 기지를 만드는 방법을 자세히 설명하지는 않는다. 그렇지만, 어린이들이 기지를 만들 수 있는  놀이동산을 만든 경험은 상당히 신선하다.

사진처럼 마당에서 아이들이 나무와 공구를 활용해 튼튼한 기지를 만드는 프로젝트를 해 보면 매우 즐거운 경험일 게다.

그 책의 내용에 착안해서 교실에서 아이들과 비밀 기지를 만들었다. 개인 사물함과 수학 학습용 현수막을 이용했다. 아이들은 매우 재미있게 했고 그 장소에 애착을 가졌다.

교실 뒤와 양 옆 세 곳에 비밀 기지를 만들었다. 사물함과 커다란 현수막을 이용했는데, 지붕이 된 현수막 아래에서 아이들이 책을 읽거나 놀이를 했다.  집단 갈등이 생길 수 있으니 부작용 예방을 위한 사전 교육이 필수다.

I found a interesting book at the local library. It is 'Building secret base'.

Original book title is '秘密基地の作り方.  尾方孝弘／著 のりたけ／イラスト 지음 | 飛鳥新社)

Sometimes I envy the wide range of themes for books in Japan. Japanese can write books about so trifle topics.

I think that almost everyone has their own experiences of secret bases. 

The memory of staying with friends, talks with fellows are alwiays in our heart.

This is a collection of those kind of experiences, not about how to make secret base.

The idea of theme park of secret base is very fresh.

As you see in the upper picture, Children will be very happy if they can build their base as they wish, Especially using power tools and lumbers.

I drew an idea from the book and tried to set several bases in my classroom. I moved students personal lockers and set walls. Big banner-It was actually for math training- for roof.

The first graders loved those places. They play some games and read books under the banner silently. 

There were some little conflicts between bases. To prevent bad situation, Make a rule for Secret Base Playing with students.

베리타스 그무개 Veritas wheel marking gauge (metric)

공구를 직접 만들어 쓰는 목수들도 있지만 내 능력을 거기까지 확장하기에는 여력이 되지 못한다.

언젠가는 할지도 모르지만.

수공구를 많이 쓰면서 그무개 욕심이 생긴다.

전통 그무개를 써 오다 베리타스 구형 그무개를 보고 쓸만하다는 생각이 들어 눈금이 있는 놈으로 샀다.

마침 우리나라에서도 베리타스 공구 유통이 되고 있어서 굳이 아마존으로 사지 않아도 되니 반갑다.

공구 품질은 뛰어나다.

좋은 품질, 마무리도 잘 되어 있으며 손에 쥐고 쓰기도 편하다.

눈금이 있어서 맞추기 참 편하다. 그리고 칼 날이 몸체에 쏙 집어 넣을 수 있어서 칼 날 보호도 되고 작업대에 세울 수 있어서 좋다.

그리고 무엇보다 미세조정을 할 수 있는데,  위 그림에서 구리색과 검은색의 큰 볼트를 서로 마주보게 돌려 콜렛을 고정한 후, 몸체를 회전시켜 미세하게 길이를 조정할 수 있다. 몸체를 한 바퀴 다 돌리면 1mm를 늘거나 준다.

조정을 마친 후 몸체 옆의 작은 구리 손잡이를 돌려 쓰면 된다.

날은 무뎌지면 갈아주면 되고 새로 교체해도 된다.

아주 만족스럽다.

Some woodworkers make their own tools by themselves.
But I can't do that now due to several reasons. I'll try someday.

Working with hand tools is pleasant. It opens another world to woodworkers.
I also entered into the hand-tool-working world a few years ago.
That pushes me to get or buy useful marking tools.
Marking tool is very essential for unplugged woodworking

I used Korean classic style marking gauge and used Veritas old version marking gauge.
Because Veritas marking gauge was also good, I bought one a few days ago.

Recently We don't have order Veritas tools through international shopping, because those tools are sold in Korea in reasonable prices. I'm happy.

The quality of marking tool is pretty good. Movement is accurate and finishing is clean.

Metric graduation on the rod provides convenience to accurate adjustment.
The blade can be fully inserted into the body, it is good for keeping blade safe.

Most of all, Micro adjustment function is the best of this tool. There are two collet for tightening. One spin of body up or down 1 mm of rod.

Even the blade goes be dull, you don't have to worry about it. You can grind on the sand paper or buy replacement blades.

I'm satisfied with this gauge.

레이저 각인기 laser engraver

공방에  또 하나의 기계가 생겼다.

아주 우연한 기회에 산 레이저 각인기.

계획에 전혀 없던 충동구매였다.

cnc 기계를 사면서 제작자가 갖고 있는 것을 우연히 보고 난 후,

함께 보러 간 회원들의 마음이 모아졌고 구매를 적극 추진했다.

회원들이 모금해서 경비를 나눴고 참여 회원은 무한사용권을 갖는다.

내 노트북과 연결해 그림 넣기, 글자 넣기, 크기 조절, 레이저 출력 조절 등의 여러 실험을 했다.

불도장을 만들까 했는데 그럴 필요는 없게 됐다.

앞으로 작품에 내 고유한 문양을 새길 수 있다.

어서 하나 만들어야겠다.

Another new machine was installed in woodworking workshop.

We, yes we, bought a laser engraver without any plan. It was wholly a sort of impulse purchase.  We were not going to get those kind of machine before we met the engraver by chance. We decided to buy that just because of certain potential possibilities.
'If we have laser engraver, we can apply it to wide cases.'

When we visited SOHO office to inspect a cnc machine, we met this machine.

After we considered price and capability, it was a nice choice.

The members for inspecting were agree to buy this laser engraver.

It was almost 600 dollars.  The workshop master suggested workshop members to fund for purchase. The condition is to give unlimited rights of using to members who donated. The output power of laser module is enough to engrave images on any kind of wood.

I connected my laptop to engraver and tried several functions, inserting images, resizing lettes, controlling output power.

It was good.

Now, I don't have to think about purchasing a electric bronze brand.

It is time to design my own logo by computer.

CNC 기계 CNC carving machine

공방에 CNC 기계를 들였다.

600 * 900mm를 가공할 수 있는 크기다.

스핀들 모터도 출력이 충분하고 수냉식이다.

무엇보다 특이한 건, 공장에서 만든 게 아니라 개인 사업자가 만든 제품이다.

소음과 성능에서 제법 쓸만해 보인다.

예전에는 대패로 오목하게 팠던 의자 깔판을. 오늘은 공방장님이 CNC로 깎아 봤는데 괜찮은 결과가 나왔다.

아래는 공방장님이 시험해 본 의자 깔판 작업 결과다.

공방장님이 Autocad로 CNC 경로를 설계해서 작업했다.

잘 되던 작업이 노트북의 에너지절약모드로 경로가 초기화 되어 오류가 생겼다.

하지만 그 실수만 아니라면 만족할만한 작업이었다.

부지런히 조작 프로그램을 익혀야겠다.

20T 두께에 8mm 깊이로 팠다. 사진으로는 깊이를 느낄 수 없군. 정면 사진을 찍었어야 하는데....

The workshop master had considered  what and how to buy a cnc machine for several months.

At last a new cnc machine was delivered.  It has water cooling system.

Working capability is 600*900 mm

Spindle motor power is enough to deal with thick hard wood and it is comparatively silent.

It is not from a industrial company but made by SOHO.

The master tested the new machine. So far, so good.


Today, the workshop master carved concave on oak seat for a trial performance.

It was very nice except small error of reset caused by laptop energy saving mode.

He designed the path for the seat using CAD software and export the code for CNC.

I have  homework to learn how to use CNC.

The depth of concave is 7mm of 20T oak board. I had better take a picture of front view.

청력 보호기 Clear Armor ear muff

삼 년 후면 쉰 살이다.

몸 군데군데 퇴화하는 걸 느낀다.

목공을 하다보면 소음과 먼지 등에 자주 노출됩니다. 루터 소리를 비롯해 기계를 쓰다 보면 귀가 한참 멍멍하다.

그러면서 눈과 귀를 보호해야겠다는 생각을 한다.

아마존에서 귀마개 Clear Armor라는 제품을 사서 쓰고 있는데 만족한다.

34데시벨을 줄여준다고 하는데 그걸 수치상으로는 느끼지 못하겠지만 귀를 보호해 주는 것은 분명하게 느낀다.

안경을 쓰고 있는데 그다지 불편하지도 않고 귀를 충분히 덮어 주고 편안하다.


I'm almost 50 years old.

I feel my age on my sensory organs.

Woodworking makes me be exposed to loud noise and dusts . I'm deafened after finishing router working.

I have to protect my ears and eyes to enjoy woodworking long time.

Some protect gears are needed.

I bought Clear Armor ear muff at Amazon.com a few months ago.

The ear muff seller says that this ear muff reduces 34Db.

I don't know how much this stuff reduce exactly, but it is certain that it has effect of protecting ears.

It is comfortable and covers my ears fully even I wear glasses.

목공에서도 다양한 측정도를 씁니다.

자가 제일 기본이지요.

그런데 특별한 용도로 나온 자들은 작업 효율을 높입니다.

아래 그림의 인크라 T자를 쓰고 있는데 제법 편리하고 정확해서 값어치가 있습니다.

그런데 폭이 좁은 나무에는 조금 불편합니다.

최근에 공방에서 케가키 게이지를 본격적으로 쓰기 시작했는데

일정 간격의 선을 긋는 일을 반복할 때 정말 좋았습니다.

10 ,15cm 라고 모델에는 써 있어도 실재 측정 길이는 훨씬 긴 걸 잴 수 있습니다.

그리고 생활 가구들에는 15cm를 써도 좋습니다.

더 이상 큰 제품은 소목에 부담스로운 크기가 됩니다.

사진에서처럼 버니어 캘리퍼스에도 선을 긋을 때 편리한 기능이 있습니다.
조합자를 이용할 수도 있겠지요.



자꾸 특수 공구를 사다보면 짐이 늘지요.

그럼에도 불구하고, 이 제품은 가져볼만한 도구입니다.



Measuring tool is essential for woodworking.
A ruler is the most basic tool.

But  sometimes, a specific tool is very useful.

It provides high efficiency to repeating work.

I have a Incra T-ruler. It is accurate, reliable and valuable.

But it is not suitable to narrow square lumber.

I started to use a new tool  Kegaki gauge.

There are two Kegaki gauge. One is Pico and the other is K-15 model.

Pico' for less than 10cm length, K-15 is for less than 15cm.
But Matsui provide bonus length to each product from 2 to 5cm
I think model Pico is enough for all furniture making, especially suitable for small project.

K-15 is also good for furniture making. Longer T mouth provide tight and stable grip. I could draw lines faster than Pico when I used K-15.

I think the other models are a little bit heavy and too long to handle easily.

Is Kegaki gauge is a Must-have-item?

Veneer calipers can be used as a marking gauge.

Combination ruler, ruler with stopper are also convenient.

Frankly, Having lots of tools are troublesome sometimes.

Although our tool box goes heavier, It is of great value.

가구제작기능사 시험 대비 Preparing for Craftman certificate

오는 일요일에 가구제작기능사 필기 시험을 봅니다.

책은 일진사의 '가구제작 및 목공예 기능사'를 사서 보고 있지만 그 책이 시장에서 거의 유일한 교재입니다.

우연히 아래 책을 봤는데 내용, 삽화, 독창성이 훨씬 좋았습니다.

다듬는 손길에서 출간한 '목공예 기능사 목공예 이론 및 실기'입니다.

아쉬운 점은 여러 이유로 이 책을 살 수가 없다는 것입니다.

강원도  인제에 있는 목공예연구소에 전화해도 답이 없어 다른 방도를 찾고 있습니다.

좋은 책이 이렇게 묻혀 버리는 게 정말 안타깝습니다.

개학을 하면 실기 시험 준비할 시간이 충분하지 않을 것 같아 미리 조금씩 연습하고 있습니다. 작은 탁자를 만들 때 숨은 주먹장 기술을 쓰는 과제가 있어서 충분히 해 두어야 합니다.

시험에서는 신속한 작업이 첫번째 요소로 보입니다.

I'm going to take a paper test for Craftman furniture making certificate.

It is a national official certificate managed by government.

I bought a book pressed by Iljinsa.

That book is really old fashioned and contained lot of error, but  the only book that I could at bookstore or online shop.

I met one book published by Inje woodworking institute.

Layout and pictures, explanation about skills were so good.

I tried to get this book, but I couldn't. I should find another ways.

Normally, I had been very busy after the end of winter vacation,

So, I should practice nowadays.

Last year, The performance task was making a small table in five hours.

Several skill, for example dovetail, box joint, mortise and tenon joint, are need to accomplish the mission

So, I practiced half blind dovetail.  Speed the most important point.

Skill test is expected to be held in March. 

목슨 바이스 Moxon vise

지난 여름에 작업대를 하나 사려고 했다.

루오보 바이스처럼 튼튼한 바이스가 달린 묵직한 작업대가 탐났다.

여러 곳을 기웃거리며 가격과 품질을 비교하며 다녔지만 마음에 드는 것은 유럽 수입품으로 가격이 너무 비쌌다.

조금 저렴한 제품은 제품의 마감이 조악하고 바이스가 약했다.

직접 만들려고 하니 재료값도 상당하다.

기계 공학을 전공한 공방장이 대안으로 목슨 바이스를 만들어서 기존의 작업대에 추가하는 는 걸 제안했다.

마침 저렴하게 사둔 참나무 계단재가 있었고 볼트와 너트만 사면 됐다.

볼트는 나사산이 사다리꼴로 평평한 것이어야 더 강한 힘과 내마모성을 가질 수 있다.

손잡이는 목선반으로 깎을 수 있다. 하지만 이번엔 티톱으로 오린 다음 전동 사포로 갈아 만들어 봤다.  손잡이를 원형으로 갈기 위해 간단한 지그를 만들어 갈았더니 효과가 좋았다.

I was going to buy a my personal workbench like roubo style last summer.

Because hardwood workbench is heavy enough and provide tight clamping.

Though I searched several online and offline shopping mall, I could not find affordable one.

Cheap one had poor vise, bad finishing.  Some workbenches imported from EU, USA were very nice, but too expensive to buy.

I and workshop members considered building our own hardwood workbench.

But after calculating budget, we threw the idea away.

Money for  each part of vise kit, thick hardwood was almost same with commercial one.

Club master suggested me a alternative idea. Making a moxon vise and install it at existing workbench by ourselves.

We collected information and bought nuts, screw, washers, Acme thread screw .

Acme thread screw has more strength, slippery rotating, anti-friction loss.

I used oak boards those I bought at clearance sale in 2014.

Handles were sculpted by band saw roughly first, and sanded by belt sander. Small simple jig was necessary for shaping exact circular handle.

I spent only about 15 dollars per each vise.

It's a really good device!
