목슨 바이스 Moxon vise

지난 여름에 작업대를 하나 사려고 했다.

루오보 바이스처럼 튼튼한 바이스가 달린 묵직한 작업대가 탐났다.

여러 곳을 기웃거리며 가격과 품질을 비교하며 다녔지만 마음에 드는 것은 유럽 수입품으로 가격이 너무 비쌌다.

조금 저렴한 제품은 제품의 마감이 조악하고 바이스가 약했다.

직접 만들려고 하니 재료값도 상당하다.

기계 공학을 전공한 공방장이 대안으로 목슨 바이스를 만들어서 기존의 작업대에 추가하는 는 걸 제안했다.

마침 저렴하게 사둔 참나무 계단재가 있었고 볼트와 너트만 사면 됐다.

볼트는 나사산이 사다리꼴로 평평한 것이어야 더 강한 힘과 내마모성을 가질 수 있다.

손잡이는 목선반으로 깎을 수 있다. 하지만 이번엔 티톱으로 오린 다음 전동 사포로 갈아 만들어 봤다.  손잡이를 원형으로 갈기 위해 간단한 지그를 만들어 갈았더니 효과가 좋았다.

I was going to buy a my personal workbench like roubo style last summer.

Because hardwood workbench is heavy enough and provide tight clamping.

Though I searched several online and offline shopping mall, I could not find affordable one.

Cheap one had poor vise, bad finishing.  Some workbenches imported from EU, USA were very nice, but too expensive to buy.

I and workshop members considered building our own hardwood workbench.

But after calculating budget, we threw the idea away.

Money for  each part of vise kit, thick hardwood was almost same with commercial one.

Club master suggested me a alternative idea. Making a moxon vise and install it at existing workbench by ourselves.

We collected information and bought nuts, screw, washers, Acme thread screw .

Acme thread screw has more strength, slippery rotating, anti-friction loss.

I used oak boards those I bought at clearance sale in 2014.

Handles were sculpted by band saw roughly first, and sanded by belt sander. Small simple jig was necessary for shaping exact circular handle.

I spent only about 15 dollars per each vise.

It's a really good device!
